Weekly Tarot Card – Three of Pentacles

This week’s card to study is the Three of Pentacles.
Esoteric Title: The Lord of Material Works

Card Description:

In the Three of Pentacles from The Llewellyn Tarot, we see a young maiden sitting in a wheat field, sewing a cloth. The are three gold pentacles beside her on the ground. Two are lying flat, one with her foot resting on it and the other with a pitcher. The third pentacle is upright and appears smaller. There’s a few poppies amongst the field and in the distance, is a home.

The Three of Pentacles card lies among the Minor Arcana, which represents day-to-day life and its ups and downs, challenges and opportunities.

pentacleThe Pentacles suit is associated with the element Earth which represents the physical: materials things, money, resources, stability, work for physical reward, health, finances, practicality, being grounded, what we have/possess.

numeber 3One and two makes three creating a triangle and a possible circle (with arcs). One is the male, two is the female, and three is the child they produce. Three is the first true magical number; the Holy Trinity, the Triple Jewel, the Three Fates, etc. and  I’m sure you’ve heard, “the third time’s the charm”. Three’s are the number of creative expression. Keywords: communication, creating, expansion, movement, action, growth, development.

Card Keywords:

Collaboration, teamwork, skilled work, talents, recognition, contributions, early stages of attainment, advancement, attention to detail, high standards.

  • Stepping on the pentacle – it’s giving her stability.
  • The three people (RWS) – collaboration and listening each other’s view.


The numbers one through nine can represent three phases of completion; three stages of a beginning, a middle, and an end. 1 – 3 is the first stage therefore, 3s are the first completion and this is what the Three of Pentacles represents. It’s about setting yourself up for future success, working hard to make it happen, and completion of an important phase.

In the Ace you had the vision, in the Two you were juggling, adapting, and, developing your vision, and now in the Three, you are seeing the first signs of success and recognition. The Three of Pentacles represent all that goes into attaining this initial success. Such as working hard, continuing to develop your skills/talent, collaborating, working with a team and listening to all their points of view, as well as learning from others; from their experience and wisdom. This is the time to take what you’ve learned, your hard work, and skills, and take it to the next level and build on it, to further your success.

In addition, this may be time you find your hard work being recognized. You can also pat yourself on the back for a job well done! This does not necessarily imply that you will be getting rewards or accolades just yet, but that you’re skills/talents are getting noticed.

The Pentacles suit also deal with the body and health therefore, this card may be pointing towards results from say working out, jogging, lifting weights, or playing sports and practicing to be the best athlete.

:  During this period, you may find your efforts at work beginning to pay off. Your boss and your peers are noticing how hard you work , your attention to detail, and that you are a good team player. They can recognize that you are open-minded, you listen to other’s perspectives, and they like collaborating with you; they respect you. This card suggests that together you will achieve your given goals and get the job done.

If are looking for a job, the Three of Pentacles advises that this may be a good time to begin networking and collaborating. It may lead to connections and future opportunities. You may want to work with a job search company, possibly a life coach or career coach, connect with former colleagues, and put yourself out there as much as you can.

If you’re an athlete, you’re seeing results from your hard work and dedication. Keep practicing, competing, and persevering. Collaborate with your coach, possible teammates, sponsors, etc. They will help you to further your sports career and/or make it to the Olympics.

: If you are in a relationship, the Three of Pentacles suggest that you work well together; your make a good team. You are supportive of each other and listen to each other’s opinions and advice. This could be a good time to do something together, as a couple, such as taking a cooking class or go ballroom dancing.

If you are single and looking for love, consider using a dating site or match making company. In addition, take up friend’s and family’s offers for matching you up or meeting someone they know. The Three of Pentacles suggests this a good time to take them up on it and go on that blind date or double date.

Or, that you may find someone taking notice of your talents, say if you’re an artist, and that this may lead to romance.
